Trago Merthyr Tydfil - Building a Mega-Store

Our Chairman, Bruce Robertson, spotted the potential to develop the site of the former Heolgerrig Brickworks in Merthyr Tydfil, in the 1990s and knew that it provided the ideal opportunity to build a brand new Trago store.

Planning applications were submitted and, after being granted, multi-million pound reclamation and ground stabilisation works started in 2005, costing £12 million.  Over 1.3 million cubic metres of spoil was moved and the ground had to be stabilised, proving level areas for the store and car parking. Plateaus were created for the further developments of the site once the store had been completed and opened. Provision was also made for the re-siting of Great Crested Newts.

Once this was completed, there was a revision of store plans, to include a 50,000ft² extension, which led to further planning permission being sought and granted.

Trago appointed Kier to build the project and heavy plant moved onto the site in September 2016, followed by the official Turf Cutting ceremony in October.

Progress at the site was rapid. The main steel framework in place by the early Spring of 2017, together with the roof. Steel frames for the first two of the 17 towers and the atrium were in place by June 2017. Cladding was complete shortly afterwards and by October, our distinctive Trago Towers were taking shape.

Despite heavy snowfall in December, work continued on the inside of the building. By February 2018, all 17 towers were in place and then the shop fitting started, shortly followed by the first delivery of goods into the warehouse. 350 staff were recruited into jobs across retail, warehousing, administration and security.

The store opened on Saturday 21st April 2018.
