Trago Merthyr Tydfil - Opening Day!

After years of planning and a full-on 18 month build, we opened our £65 million store on Saturday 21st April. We were blessed with glorious Welsh sunshine for pretty much the whole day and we welcomed 12,000 people through the doors – some of whom had been queueing since 10pm the previous evening!

Getting a 200,000 square foot store open has been a challenge, for obvious reasons. 38 departments; over 200,000 products all stacked either side of a yellow coloured boulevard that runs for half a kilometre from one end of the retail space to the other! We were overwhelmed by the welcome from those who came – from locals (many of whom had walked), to visitors from other areas in Wales…even old hand Trago-ites who had come up from Cornwall to enjoy the first new Trago being opened since the mid 1970s!

The store was opened by our Chairman, Bruce Robertson, with the actual ribbon cutting being done by Bruce’s daughter, Ellie, and former Welsh Rugby International, Jonathan Davies OBE.

We’d organised some very special entertainment for the day, including plenty of Welsh talent, such as the Treharris Male Voice Choir, Tenovus Cancer Care Choir, Ragsy (star of The Voice) and the choir club from Coed y Dderwen Primary School. A giant red dragon was on hand with his accompanying princess and many of our suppliers came along to give product advice and hand out some goodies. Students from The College, Merthyr Tydfil, put together some incredible costumes and we were treated to beautiful Welsh harp music from Bethan Watson. Also with us for the day were some of our partners who had worked with us on recruitment and training, together with other local organisations, including the Brecon Central Mountain Rescue Team (with ‘rescue dog’ Floss) and The Royal Welsh.
