How to Choose the Right Mattress

Mattess PicThere’s nothing quite as frustrating as a bad night’s sleep. We toss, we turn and we fidget our way through the night and wake up… Well, not exactly at our peak. Coffee might well get us through the day, but with another night to face on the dreaded Bed of Discomfort, there’s little joy to be had.


But it doesn’t have to be like that. Believe it or not, there are people out there waking up from actual sleep, well-rested and ready to tackle the day – regardless of whether there’s a Costa coffee around the corner.


Their secret? The right mattress for them. That’s right, every person has different requirements from their mattress, and if you’re not comfortable, the chances are you’re using the wrong mattress.


But how do you go about choosing the right mattress in the first place? After all, what’s comfortable initially might not be good for you in the long-run.


The answer is simple. You need to know the right terms.


What are the Types of Mattress Available?


We’re going to leave size discussion out of this as you’ll likely already know how big of a mattress you require. Instead, we’re going to look at the types of mattress available:

  • Open Spring Mattress – Sometimes known as ‘open coil’ or ‘continuous coil’ mattresses, these mattresses contain one long piece of metal wire coiled up into numerous metal springs alongside a border wire to maintain shape and structure. These tend to be budget models and are excellent for spare bedrooms or kids’ rooms.

  • Pocket Spring Mattresses – Far more luxurious than open spring mattresses, pocket spring mattresses have small individual springs housed in their own fabric enclosures. This means that the springs move independently and provide more support. How Firm Should my Mattress Be?


Partly a matter of personal taste, mattress firmness shouldn’t just be decided on how comfortable you found a mattress in a store. Here’s who each firmness rating is for:

  • Soft – Soft mattresses are best for those who sleep on their side or change positions often during the night.

  • Medium Soft – A medium soft mattress is perfect for those who change positions during the night, simply want a little more support or sleep with somebody who needs more support.

  • Medium Firm – Ideal for those who sleep on their back predominantly, medium firm mattresses like the Empress Mattress offer some sink but still support the lower back.
